George Bowker letters, 1862-1898.

A majority of the correspondence reflects the personal and military activities of George Bowker and the 89th New York Volunteers during the American Civil War. The 89th New York fought in the eastern theater of the war, and Bowker mentions the Siege of Suffolk (April 11 - May 4, 1862) and the bombardment of Fort Sumter (August 17 - August 23, 1863). Included in the collection are the letters of Clara Bowker dating from 1897 to 1898. It is also important to note that many of the documents are in a deteriorated state due to exposure to mold. Transcripts of originals are available.
